Lower Back Pain
SITUATION
Jordyn, a 29-year-old barista and café manager in Williamsburg, came to KIRO with persistent lower back pain that started several months previously. Long hours on her feet brewing coffee, moving between the espresso machine and the counter, and lifting bags of beans caused stiffness and an aching sensation in her lumbar spine. She also experienced occasional sharp pain when bending to reach supplies or lift heavy trays. Jordyn had tried over-the-counter pain medication, heating pads, and short stretching routines, but these only provided temporary relief. Concerned about the impact on her work and daily life, she sought chiropractic care to relieve pain, restore mobility, and prevent the discomfort from returning.
TREATMENT
Care began with a comprehensive evaluation by our team of doctors. The assessment revealed reduced lumbar range of motion, tightness in the lower back, glutes, and hip flexors, and a noticeable postural imbalance from standing for long periods. A nervous system scan showed elevated tension in the lumbar spine, confirming the reported symptoms and physical exam findings.
Based on these results, our doctors designed a personalized three-month care plan aimed at addressing the underlying causes of Jordyn’s discomfort. Care began with twice-weekly chiropractic adjustments targeting the lumbar spine and pelvis to restore proper motion and reduce nerve tension paired with gentle decompression on KIRO’s flexion distraction tables. Hands-on soft tissue therapy focused on the lower back, glutes, and hip flexors to relieve muscular tightness and improve overall mobility.
At the five-week reassessment, our doctors repeated the nervous system scan and re-evaluated lumbar mobility. The scan showed decreased tension in the lower back, and Jordyn reported fewer episodes of sharp pain and less stiffness during work shifts. Based on these objective and subjective improvements, care was adjusted from twice-weekly to once-weekly visits, with an increased focus on strengthening the core and improving posture for long-term correction.
Over the following two months, Jordyn completed a progressive exercise program designed to strengthen her deep core stabilizers, improve hip mobility, and reinforce proper spinal alignment during long periods of standing. Stretching routines targeting the glutes, hamstrings, and hip flexors were integrated to reduce muscular imbalances and support lasting relief.
By the end of the three-month care plan, Jordyn reported full resolution of lower back pain and improved endurance throughout her shifts. A final nervous system scan confirmed tension levels throughout the lumbar spine had returned to normal.
RESULT
During her three months with KIRO, Jordyn experienced significant improvements in lower back mobility, posture, and day-to-day comfort. She no longer experienced sharp or lingering pain while working, and her overall energy levels improved. Jordyn has since adopted a daily core-strengthening and stretching routine, combined with periodic maintenance chiropractic visits, to maintain her spinal health and prevent future lower back issues. She states she feels so loose and mobile that she’s even taken up jogging around McCarren park on the weekends with her dog: something she never felt up to before.
