Upper Back Pain

  2. SITUATION

Hunter, a 38-year-old management consultant, came to KIRO with upper back pain that had been building over the past year. His job required long hours working on a laptop from client offices, coffee shops, and his Midtown apartment. The pain sat squarely between his shoulder blades and tended to worsen during long workdays, subway commutes, and frequent travel with a backpack and carry-on.

Over time, Hunter noticed stiffness and fatigue setting in by mid-afternoon, making it harder to sit comfortably, stay focused in meetings, and keep up with his regular workouts. He had tried massage therapy, foam rolling, and occasional anti-inflammatory medication, but the relief never lasted. Wanting a more permanent solution, and hoping to fix the root of the problem rather than just manage flare-ups, Hunter decided to seek out chiropractic care.

  3. TREATMENT

Hunter began care with a thorough evaluation by KIRO’s team of doctors. The exam showed limited movement through the upper back, significant muscle tightness between the shoulder blades, and rounded shoulders: patterns commonly seen in people who spend long hours sitting and working on laptops. Testing also revealed that the muscles responsible for supporting good posture were fatiguing more quickly than expected.

To better understand what was happening beneath the surface, our doctors performed a nervous system scan. The scan showed elevated tension through the upper back and shoulders, which helped explain both Hunter’s pain and the ongoing tightness he was experiencing.

Using these findings, our doctors created a personalized three-month care plan focused on improving movement in the upper back, relieving muscle tension, and rebuilding postural support. Early care included consistent chiropractic adjustments to restore motion in the thoracic spine, along with soft tissue work to ease tight, overworked muscles.

Five weeks into care, Hunter’s progress was rechecked with updated movement testing and a repeat nervous system scan. The results showed reduced tension and improved mobility, and Hunter reported feeling more comfortable during his workday. With these improvements confirmed, visits were gradually spaced out, and care shifted toward strengthening and long-term support.

In the final phase of care, Hunter was guided through targeted exercises to build endurance in the upper back and postural muscles, along with mobility work to offset long periods of sitting and travel. Simple strategies for taking movement breaks during the day were also introduced to help maintain results.

By the end of the care plan, Hunter’s upper back mobility had improved significantly, muscle tension was greatly reduced, and his nervous system readings had returned to a healthy range.

  4. RESULT

During his time at KIRO, Hunter saw a meaningful reduction in upper back pain and stiffness. He was able to get through full workdays without discomfort, sit more comfortably in meetings, and return to workouts without the upper back fatigue he’d been dealing with before. Commuting and travel felt easier, even on long, busy days.

Hunter now continues with occasional chiropractic care and stays mindful of movement during his workday. He recently shared that he no longer feels worn down by long hours at his desk and instead feels stronger, more comfortable, and better equipped to keep up with life in the city.
