Neck Pain
SITUATION
Katherine, a 34-year-old marketing manager, came to KIRO with neck and upper back pain that worsened during long hours at her desk. Turning her head between two computer monitors made the pain sharper, and by the end of most workdays, she was experiencing tension headaches. She had tried massage, heat, and short-term muscle relaxers with only temporary relief. She finally sought out chiropractic care to help improve her posture, reduce her pain, and prevent headaches from returning.
TREATMENT
Care began with a comprehensive examination performed by our team of doctors. The evaluation revealed limited neck range of motion during side-to-side movement, notable muscle tightness at the base of the neck and across the shoulders, and a forward head posture commonly seen in workers with desk jobs. To further assess function, our doctors completed a nervous system scan, which showed elevated tension levels in the neck and upper back: confirming and supporting both the patient’s symptoms and physical exam findings.
Based on these findings, our doctors designed a personalized three-month care plan focused on correcting the underlying causes of her discomfort. Care began with twice-weekly chiropractic adjustments aimed at improving spinal motion in the neck and upper back, paired with hands-on soft tissue therapy to reduce muscular tension and improve movement quality.
At the five-week mark, the doctors reassessed progress by repeating the nervous system scan and re-evaluating range of motion and headache frequency. The scan demonstrated decreased shoulder tension, with only a few remaining areas of tightness in the neck. Improved mobility and a reduction in headaches were also noted. Based on these objective improvements, our doctors confidently transitioned care from twice-weekly visits to once per week and shifted the focus from symptom relief to strength, stabilization, and long-term correction.
Over the following two months, our doctors developed and implemented a set of progressive exercises designed to strengthen the deep stabilizing muscles of the neck and upper back. This was combined with posture-corrective, chest-opening stretches to address muscular imbalances and support lasting postural improvement.
By the end of the three-month care plan, our doctors confirmed resolution of headache-related workday interruptions. A final nervous system scan showed tension levels had returned to a normal range throughout all spinal regions, reinforcing the effectiveness of the care.
RESULT
During her initial three months with KIRO, Katherine experienced major improvements in her neck mobility, posture, and day-to-day comfort. Her headaches resolved, and her neck and upper back pain no longer interfered with work or sleep. She has since created an entirely new wellness regimen for herself, including pain-free yoga classes, walks through Central Park with her dog, and maintenance chiropractic care to keep her feeling her best.
