Stress-Related Pain
SITUATION
Faith, a 26-year-old architect, came to KIRO with neck, shoulder, and upper back pain that had developed over the past few weeks. She moved across the country two months ago for a new job at a new firm, and was under intense pressure to meet a tight deadline for one of the largest projects of her career.
Her symptoms included tightness and stiffness in the shoulders, aching across the upper back, occasional tension headaches, and jaw clenching—all of which worsened after long hours at her drafting desk or reviewing blueprints. She had tried massage, heat packs, and over-the-counter pain relievers, but relief was only temporary. She was starting to experience insomnia due to the pain, which only further added to her daily stress. Concerned about how her discomfort was affecting her focus and productivity, Faith sought chiropractic care to reduce her stress-related pain and restore mobility.
TREATMENT
Care began with a complete examination by KIRO’s doctors. Evaluation revealed tight upper trapezius, anterior neck, and shoulder muscles, limited cervical spine range of motion, and forward head posture, common in people working long hours under stress. A baseline nervous system scan confirmed severely elevated tension throughout the neck, shoulders, and upper back, linking her muscular discomfort to both posture and chronic stress.
Based on these findings, our doctors designed a personalized twelve-week care plan. Care began with twice-weekly chiropractic adjustments targeting the cervical and thoracic spine to improve spinal motion and reduce tension. Hands-on soft tissue therapy focused on the neck, shoulders, and upper back muscles, releasing trigger points and tightness exacerbated by prolonged work hours and stress.
At the four-week mark, her progress was reassessed with a follow-up nervous system scan and range-of-motion evaluation. Though still higher than desired, the nervous system scan demonstrated reduced tension in the shoulders and neck. Her reassessment also showed improved cervical mobility, and a noticeable decrease in headache frequency. Based on these results, the care plan shifted to once-weekly visits with an emphasis on strength, stabilization, and maintaining relief under continued work stress.
Faith was also guided through stress-relief strategies, including posture correction, deep-breathing exercises, and ergonomic desk adjustments to prevent strain during long work sessions. Gentle stretching and mobility exercises were prescribed for the neck, shoulders, and upper back to promote flexibility and circulation.
Over the final four weeks of care, progressive strengthening exercises were introduced to stabilize the upper back and shoulder muscles, combined with ongoing posture coaching and stress-management techniques to support long-term recovery and resilience.
RESULT
By the end of her twelve-week care plan, Faith experienced significant reductions in neck, shoulder, and upper back pain, and her tension headaches had resolved. She reported improved posture and mobility, allowing her to focus on her project deadlines without discomfort. A final nervous system scan confirmed that tension levels throughout her spine had returned to a normal range.
Faith happily reports she met her deadline, and has developed much healthier coping strategies for stress. She now maintains a regular posture and mobility routine, combined with ergonomic work strategies and guided relaxation exercises, which help her manage stress and prevent flare-ups while navigating high-pressure work demands.
