Kyphosis

  2. SITUATION

Karis, a 29-year-old luxury nail technician in Brooklyn, came to KIRO with persistent upper back discomfort and a noticeable forward rounding of her shoulders that made her feel “hunched” by the end of every workday. She explained she spent most of her day leaning over clients at her workstation, performing detailed hand-drawn work, and holding the same posture for hours at a time. After two clients, her upper back and shoulders always felt stiff and fatigued, and she noticed that her shoulders stayed rounded even after leaving work. She tried ergonomic cushions, stretching between appointments, and over-the-counter pain relievers, but the discomfort and posture fatigue always returned. Looking for a solution that would aesthetically improve her posture, reduce upper back tension, and make her daily work more comfortable, Karis decided to try chiropractic care at KIRO.

  3. TREATMENT

Our doctors began care with a thorough full-spine evaluation. The examination showed exaggerated rounding of the upper thoracic spine, tight muscles across her shoulders and upper back, and limited thoracic extension. These are all classic signs of postural kyphosis seen in professionals who lean forward for long periods. A primary nervous system scan confirmed elevated tension throughout the entirety of the upper and mid back.

Our doctors worked with Karis to create a targeted care plan focused on reducing muscle tension, and retraining her postural muscles to support an upright position. This plan began with full-spine chiropractic adjustments and gentle mid-back mobilization to improve motion and reduce stiffness, paired with diaphragmatic breathing exercises to relax overactive muscles and improve posture awareness.

After a month of consistent adjustments, our doctors decided to reduce adjustment frequency to once per week and introduce specific thoracic extension exercises to counter her forward curve and strengthen the upper back. This decision was made after an updated nervous system scan showed moderate improvement in muscle tension. To interrupt static posture during long workdays, our doctors advised Karis to  incorporate short movement-based breaks between clients, which helped prevent her muscles from staying locked in a hunched position.

Our doctors monitored Karis’s progress through repeat assessments which showed steady improvements in posture, spinal mobility, and muscle tension. At the end of 12 weeks of care, a final nervous system scan showed significantly reduced levels of muscular tension throughout the midback. However, due to the nature of her career, our doctors recommended Karis consider continuing maintenance treatment in whichever way was feasible for her.

  4. RESULT

Over the course of her care at KIRO, Karis went from feeling constantly “hunched” to enjoying restriction-free mobility of her upper spine. She was able to maintain a more upright position during long workdays, her shoulders and upper back no longer fatigued as quickly, and she felt more comfortable moving between clients and shifts. Karis opted to maintain her progress with a combination of diaphragmatic breathing, thoracic extension exercises, pilates classes, and periodic chiropractic care.
